India-Pakistan military escalation has reached a critical point after India launched missile strikes across the border, hitting Muridke in Pakistan’s Punjab province. The attack followed the April 22 assault in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, where 26 tourists were killed. India blamed Pakistan-based groups and launched Operation Sindoor in retaliation.

Conflicting Claims Over Muridke Compound

Indian officials claimed the strike targeted terrorist infrastructure, specifically Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which they accuse of past attacks, including the 2008 Mumbai massacre. Muridke has long been associated with LeT’s founder, Hafiz Saeed.

But Pakistani authorities denied these allegations. They said the missiles hit a civilian area, including a mosque and an educational facility now under state control. According to local officials, three staff members died, and one was injured. The compound housed a seminary, schools, a hospital, and 80 residential units.

Rescue workers described scenes of destruction. The blast scattered debris across the ground and collapsed roofs. The missile fragments still radiated heat as they damaged the mosque’s prayer hall. The Pakistani government had previously taken over the complex from Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) in 2019, placing it under strict supervision.

Officials said there had been warnings of a possible strike. Staff and residents were told to evacuate days before the attack, which helped reduce the casualties. However, some clerical staff remained on-site and lost their lives.

Religious scholars at the compound denied any militant ties. One teacher said the compound serves as an educational institution, not a training ground for fighters. He defended the presence of physical training facilities as standard for student development.

As both nations exchange fire and accuse each other of drone and missile attacks, fears of a wider conflict loom large. The United Nations has urged restraint.

With casualties mounting and rhetoric hardening on both sides, India-Pakistan military escalation shows no sign of slowing down.
