Empowering Communities: NDU Students Champion Youth-Driven Development

Islamabad — May 28, 2025: In a striking example of youth-driven development, students from the National Defence University (NDU) have made a lasting impact in Tharparkar. Under their community service project IBTIDA—meaning “the beginning”—they successfully installed a solar-powered water pump with a storage tank in a remote village.

Before the project, locals walked nearly 3 kilometers daily to fetch water. However, now over 100 households have clean water at their doorstep. “We didn’t just install a pump. We brought dignity and ease to their lives,” said student Nayab Malik.

Moreover, the system’s benefits are spreading. Nearby villages have also begun accessing the pump, showing how youth-driven development can ripple across communities

Beyond Water: Broader Acts of Service

The IBTIDA team extended their efforts beyond Tharparkar. For instance, in Lower Kurram (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), they revived a non-functional library in Sadda Tehsil. By donating new books, they gave local children access to education once again.

In addition, their work touched lives closer to home. They discreetly gifted support staff at NDU during Eid, showing gratitude through action. Furthermore, the students:

  • Visited a school in Thar and distributed bags and stationery
  • Ran a cleanliness drive at F-9 Park, Islamabad
  • Supported orphans through the Noreen Welfare Trust
  • Donated books for a library in Lower Kurram
  • Held a seminar on disability inclusion
  • Distributed rations to underprivileged families

Funds were raised through a student-led Eid stall at NDU and personal networks. Thanks to this transparent, community-supported approach, the students were empowered to lead effectively.

In the heart of drought-hit Tharparkar, these students turned a basic need into a symbol of hope. Ultimately, their actions prove that, when guided and motivated, youth are capable of leading real, long-term change. With one water pump, they began something greater—a movement rooted in purpose, unity, and youth-driven development. Indeed, this initiative stands as a powerful reminder that empowered young people can transform communities and inspire hope for generations to come.
