An earthquake on Monday night triggered mass panic inside Karachi’s Malir Jail, leading to a major jail security breach. As tremors shook the facility, officials unlocked barracks to prevent collapse-related casualties. However, chaos erupted when more than 1,000 inmates rushed toward the Mari Gate.
Several prisoners broke the locks, scaled the walls, and escaped. In total, 216 inmates fled the jail. Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah confirmed the incident early Tuesday, calling it an “unprecedented breach.”
Gunfire, Injuries, and a City on Edge
During the escape, one inmate grabbed a Kalashnikov from an officer and opened fire. The attack injured two Frontier Corps (FC) personnel and one police officer. Simultaneously, inmates attacked staff with stones and sticks, further destabilizing the situation.
Gunshots alarmed nearby neighborhoods. Traffic halted on both sides of the National Highway as frightened commuters abandoned their vehicles. Authorities closed roads near the jail and deployed Rangers, police, and SSU units to restore control.
Law enforcement quickly responded. They recaptured 78 escapees—50 inside the jail, 19 at snap-check posts, and 8 in raids across local neighborhoods.

Jail Investigation, Manhunt, and Security Concerns
Police launched a massive manhunt in surrounding areas, including Shah Latif Town, Bhains Colony, and Gaddafi Town. Announcements echoed through mosques, urging citizens to report escapees.
DIG Prisons Hassan Sahito revealed that panic spread among the 6,000 inmates shortly after the tremors. He noted that many of the escapees were repeat drug offenders. Interior Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar assured the public of a thorough investigation to determine if negligence or a structural flaw enabled the jailbreak.
Officers injured in the incident are receiving treatment, while search teams continue their efforts to recover the remaining fugitives.
Despite progress, the event exposed alarming cracks in jail security protocols and raised urgent questions about emergency preparedness in Pakistan’s correctional system.
