Islamabad – On August 14, Pakistan observed its 78th Independence Day with a show of national pride, featuring a mix of solemn ceremonies, public celebrations, and a recommitment to a prosperous future.

The celebration began at midnight with a series of significant events and will continue throughout the day, featuring flag-hoisting ceremonies, formal tributes, and an outpouring of nationalistic pride among the nation’s citizens.

On the eve of August 13, the countrywide celebration started with a legendary showcase of national pride, the Marka-I-Haq. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir attended the ceremony as guests of honour. At midnight, the skies across key cities were lit up with blistering fireworks to mark the beginning of the historic day.

The notable structures, such as the Parliament House in Islamabad or the grand Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore, were illuminated in the national colors green and white. Huge numbers of people went to these monuments, sharing a common identity and pride.

Flag-Hoisting Ceremonies Across Country

The official ceremonies were the essence of the morning observances. In Islamabad, the hoisting of the flag in the Presidency was the main event of the day.

In his address, the President saluted the sacrifices of founding fathers such as Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Muhammad Iqbal.

All provincial and district headquarters, along with Pakistani missions overseas, had similar flag-hoisting ceremonies.

A formal change of guard ceremony was held at the Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi, where a new batch of cadets representing the armed forces took over guard duties.

In the meantime, a similar event was taking place in Lahore at the tomb of Allama Iqbal, the national poet whose vision had led to the establishment of Pakistan.

Support from the International Community

The international community also came together in a spirit of cooperation and diplomatic support. The foreign embassies and high commissions have resorted to different social media channels, especially X (previously Twitter), to convey their congratulations.

The US embassy in Islamabad published a message about the common ground over shared values of freedom and democracy, and the Chinese embassy underlined the strong friendship between the two countries.

Delegations of the United Kingdom, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and other friendly nations sent their congratulations and reasserted their intent to enhance bilateral ties.

All these messages emphasized the significance of Pakistan in regional and Global politics.

Spirit of the Public at the National Holiday

The public also celebrates the national holiday in a joyous mood. Children and youth are observed to be actively involved in celebrations with their families. National flags are put on cars and motorcycles, and the citizens are dressed in green and white. Streets are crowded with car rallies, face-painting, and musical performances.

The spirit of events as a whole is a great reminder of the founding principles of the national spirit and its undying desire to live in peace and prosperity.
