Islamabad — The Government of Pakistan has announced a comprehensive and immediate crackdown on fake news and propaganda networks linked to the recent Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protests.

The new federal plan includes the identification of key perpetrators, initiation of cybercrime prosecutions, and tracing of internationally based disinformation operators, according to official sources.

The National Coordination Centre for Information Security and Intelligence has begun compiling a list of central figures running fake news networks. Legal action is to be initiated under relevant cybercrime laws.

The Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cybercrime and Special Units have been tasked to carry out arrests of suspected individuals, while the Deepfake Forensic Lab has been reactivated to verify doctored videos and audio clips.

Social Media Platforms Placed Under Scrutiny

Government officials said that social media companies and online platforms are required to remove fake content within 24 hours of identification. Accounts repeatedly involved in disinformation will be permanently suspended upon government recommendation.

A public warning has also been issued, cautioning citizens that sharing or forwarding unverified videos and clips may lead to legal action under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).

Zero Tolerance for Anti-State Propaganda

Authorities reiterated that there will be zero tolerance for hate speech, anti-state propaganda, or the spread of fabricated news targeting state institutions.

Diplomatic channels have been activated to trace overseas propaganda networks, and legal inquiries are underway to identify foreign-based individuals involved in coordinated disinformation campaigns.

Officials confirmed that international cooperation, including possible Interpol Red Notices, is being discussed to bring responsible actors to justice.

Verification and Financial Tracking Measures

Television channels, bloggers, and digital media outlets have been instructed to conduct dual verification before broadcasting or publishing any report or video clip.

Targeted operations are being launched against misleading hashtags and organized troll cells, while authorities will also screen financial transactions of entities or individuals funding fake news operations.

The government stated that harsher penalties will apply during national emergencies to discourage the spread of rumors or violent narratives.

Provincial Coordination and Public Reporting

Provincial focal persons have been appointed to ensure real-time response and counter-messaging coordination.

Citizens are urged to report fake news or suspicious online content via the official government helpline 1919, with assurances that the identities of informants will remain confidential.

Sources at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said the campaign’s objective is not limited to punishment but also aims to fill the information gap, promote media literacy, and ensure access to verified information. Officials emphasized that all actions will be evidence-based, ensuring transparency and adherence to constitutional and legal standards.

The government’s move has been widely welcomed by security and policy circles. However, human rights and journalist organizations have urged authorities to ensure that freedom of expression and journalistic integrity are not compromised in the process.

Federal officials responded that accountability and press freedom are not contradictory goals, asserting that due process and evidentiary standards will guide all proceedings under the new policy.
