Moscow, Russia – Russia has officially volunteered to mediate between Pakistan and the Afghan regime to relieve the tension quietly escalating along the mutual border. The proposal follows the recent direct peace discussions between the two countries, culminating in a standoff, which has led to an increase in the fear of another military conflict.
Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, speaking at the Kremlin, emphasized that the priority of Russia is the establishment of stability in the region. She referred to Pakistan and Afghanistan as being major partners in the region and mentioned that the further development of border tensions would present a grave danger to the overall security of South Asia.
Moscow Backs Existing Ceasefire
The Russian effort is preceded by a phone call between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, with the emphasis on alleviating the mounting tension.
Zakharova specifically hailed the recent achievement of previous diplomatic talks and, at the same time, indicated that Russia was happy with the accord that had been made between Kabul and Islamabad through the mediation of Qatar and Turkiye on a mutual ceasefire and an end to cross-border shootings along the Afghan Pakistani border.
Russia emphasized that the only way of achieving a lasting solution to the underlying conflicts is through protracted discussions and talks. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson called on both nations to restrain themselves, solve the differences through negotiations, and not to carry out additional actions that might complicate the already strained state of affairs.
