Canberra  On 27 November 2025, the Australian Government officially listed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism, following attacks targeting Australia’s Jewish community in 2024.

The announcement was made jointly by Tony Burke MP, Minister for Home Affairs, Attorney-General Michelle Rowland, and other officials. The listing follows ASIO assessments that the IRGC orchestrated attacks at Lewis’ Continental Kitchen in Sydney (October 2024) and the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne (December 2024), acts designed to sow fear and division within Australia’s multicultural society. https://x.com/htnworld/status/1994269402875773284?s=20

 Criminal Code Amendment Act 2025

The IRGC becomes the first organization listed under Australia’s new State Sponsors of Terrorism Act 2025, which empowers authorities to act against state-backed terrorist entities. Under Part 5.3A of the Criminal Code, it is now a criminal offense to be a member of, support, fund, recruit for, or associate with a listed state sponsor of terrorism. Penalties include up to 25 years in prison. Minister Burke emphasized that the listing strengthens Australia’s ability to prevent and disrupt extremist activity while keeping citizens safe.

Official Statement

Foreign Minister Senator Penny Wong described the IRGC’s attacks as “unprecedented and dangerous acts of aggression” and affirmed that the Albanese Government has taken stronger measures against Iran than any previous administration. https://x.com/htnworld/status/1994270648986964198?s=20

Attorney-General Michelle Rowland stated that the new legal reforms make it harder for malicious foreign actors to operate in Australia and ensure robust counter-terrorism laws.

Iran Condemns Decision

Iran condemned the listing as “illegal, dangerous, and politically motivated”, claiming that it violates international law and the sovereignty of states. Tehran accused Australia of acting under pressure from the “Zionist regime” and insisted that the IRGC is an official branch of Iran’s military responsible for national defense. Iranian officials warned that they would take all necessary measures to protect the IRGC’s status.

Public Security Advisory

Australian authorities urged citizens to report any suspicious activity to the National Security Hotline at 1800 123 400, reinforcing that terrorism knows no borders and highlighting ongoing international collaboration to combat extremism.
