Islamabad Capital Territory— Islamabad police on Wednesday arrested an Afghan national who was posing as a US embassy official using a fake identification card.
The suspect, identified as Haris, was intercepted while entering the Diplomatic Enclave through Gate No. 2, accompanied by two women in a vehicle.
According to police and intelligence sources, Haris was already under surveillance and was wanted in multiple fraud cases.
Afghan suspect held with fake US Embassy ID Card
Officials confirmed that the US embassy had previously lodged complaints regarding his suspicious activities.
Acting on timely intelligence, law enforcement agencies detained him at the entrance and shifted him to the Secretariat Police Station for further interrogation.
Authorities are now determining whether the suspect had accomplices and the extent of his operations within the capital.
Investigation underway as security protocols reviewed
According to investigators, Haris had been using fake documents to impersonate an embassy representative, allowing him to deceive and defraud citizens.
The incident has renewed concerns about security lapses in sensitive zones, especially those housing foreign missions.
Officials say the case underscores the need for enhanced verification procedures at all access points to the Diplomatic Enclave.
There is a growing number of incidents around the world where Afghan nationals are directly involved in the acts of terrorism. The shooting of National Guards in Washington DC or deadly attack on Bondi Beach where more than 15 people were killed. In all these terrorist activities Afghan nationals are prime suspects.
Therefore, security agencies are also evaluating whether the suspect’s activities posed any broader threat. Police have tightened monitoring around the diplomatic enclave as part of the ongoing inquiry.
