Russia is considering the construction of a railway through Afghanistan as part of efforts to strengthen transport links with countries in the Global South, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk has said, reported by Russian Media.
Speaking to Russia 24 television, Overchuk said improved connectivity with southern markets would help Russia diversify its transport and logistics routes.
He noted that different options for a railway crossing Afghan territory are under discussion, with both western and eastern corridors being examined.

Russian experts, he added, are currently studying the project’s feasibility and taking part in technical consultations.
The remarks follow earlier comments by Denis Manturov, who said Russia and Uzbekistan were jointly preparing a feasibility study for the Trans-Afghan railway.
The proposed route would eventually extend to Pakistan, strengthening regional trade links.
Uzbekistan, which already has rail connectivity with Afghanistan, aims to serve as a logistics hub connecting Russia, Central Asia and South Asia.
In November 2024, Overchuk also conveyed Moscow’s interest in the project during talks with Afghan authorities in Kabul.
