New York— The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday, December 29, 2025 to discuss Israel’s surprise recognition of Somaliland. Somalia requested the session after Israel announced the move on Friday.
Somalia will assume the Security Council presidency in January, adding weight to the issue.
Israel has become the first UN member state to officially recognize Somaliland as an independent country. The territory declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has never gained international recognition. Many states still view it as part of Somalia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel and Somaliland would pursue cooperation in agriculture and economic development.
Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said the decision would include opening embassies and appointing ambassadors. He added that Israel would “act responsibly” and continue working with partners it says support regional stability.
The move triggered strong criticism across Africa and the Middle East. More than 20 countries, along with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union, condemned Israel’s decision.
Pakistan and Türkiye also opposed the recognition calling it a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.
Diplomats expect several Security Council members to criticize Israel during the emergency session, as concerns grow over stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.
