PESHAWAR — Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has called on the legal community to take a leading role in protecting the Constitution, restoring judicial independence, and resisting what he described as unconstitutional practices in the country.
Addressing lawyers at the Hyderabad High Court, Muhammad Sohail Afridi said the struggle was not for any individual or political party but aimed at strengthening democracy, ensuring the supremacy of the Constitution, and upholding the rule of law. He stated that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains the only province governed by what he termed a genuine public mandate.
The chief minister alleged that the public mandate was undermined on 8 February, resulting in what he called imposed rule, which he said caused serious damage to democratic values. He emphasized that lawyers carry the primary responsibility for safeguarding the Constitution and that this duty has become more critical under current circumstances.
Chief Minister Warns of Constitutional Imbalance
Muhammad Sohail Afridi warned that constitutional amendments introduced after the Twenty-Seventh Amendment pose serious risks and are affecting the balance of the state structure. He urged lawyers to launch an organized movement for constitutional strength and judicial autonomy, assuring them of full and unconditional support from workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
He stressed that lawyers must play an active and decisive role in any street movement to effectively resist actions that violate the Constitution.
Call for Inter-Provincial Unity and Cooperation
The chief minister invited the Hyderabad lawyers’ community to visit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, emphasizing inter-provincial harmony and joint cooperation in the constitutional struggle. He also stated that on the issue of Sindh’s water rights, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has consistently stood with the people of Sindh and will continue to raise its voice for the protection of the legitimate rights of all provinces.
