French authorities have intercepted a Russian oil tanker named Grinch in the Mediterranean Sea. The vessel lacked proper registration and was suspected of attempting to bypass international sanctions on Russian oil. The Indian captain has been detained for questioning, while other crew members remain on board.
Tanker Intercepted in Mediterranean
Authorities say the ship is part of Russia’s “shadow fleet,” used to evade Western restrictions through opaque ownership and registration. The tanker was redirected to an anchorage near Fos-sur-Mer, close to Marseille, for inspection and legal investigation.
Indian Captain Detained
The captain, an Indian national, is cooperating with French judicial authorities. Other crew members, reportedly also Indian, remain on board during the ongoing investigation.
Shadow Fleet and Sanctions Evasion
Experts note that shadow fleets like Grinch are increasingly used to bypass sanctions, making maritime enforcement more challenging for European authorities. France says the operation is part of broader efforts to monitor and disrupt illicit oil trade.
Inspection and Legal Review
French authorities are examining the ship’s flag, documentation, and potential use of false registration. Investigators are focused on verifying whether the vessel was intentionally masking its Russian ownership to avoid sanctions.
