Russian media outlets, citing the country’s Ministry of Defense, reported that Vasily Osmakov, Russia’s Deputy Minister of Defense, met with Muhammad Farid, Deputy Minister of Defense of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan for Strategy and Policy, in Moscow.

According to the reports, the two sides discussed the current state and future prospects of cooperation in areas of mutual interest, signaling a potential deepening of military and strategic ties.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties agreed to take further joint steps to establish systematic and structured cooperation, according to the reports.

HTN sources confirmed that Russia will provide the Taliban with light artillery, training, intelligence sharing, and police training, reflecting a tangible outcome of the discussions.

Analysts note that this engagement reflects Russia’s ongoing efforts to maintain influence in Afghanistan and to explore avenues for collaboration with the Taliban in defense and strategic matters.

However, experts warn that despite international engagements, the Taliban’s oppressive governance, systematic human rights abuses, and suppression of women and minorities continue unabated. Collaboration with such a regime raises serious concerns about accountability, transparency, and the long-term security of Afghan citizens.
