UN updates sanctions list targeting Taliban officials, keeping key leaders restricted while removing dozens of others.

March 16, 2026

The United Nations Security Council has updated its sanctions list targeting members of the Taliban administration. The revision shows that several senior officials remain under international sanctions, while dozens of others have been removed.

According to the update issued on March 9, 22 senior Taliban leaders are still subject to measures including travel bans, asset freezes, and restrictions on access to weapons. These sanctions form part of ongoing efforts by the international community to monitor individuals linked to the Taliban leadership.

Key Taliban Leaders Remain Under Sanctions

The updated list includes a number of Taliban officials who currently hold important roles in the administration. These include Amir Khan Muttaqi, Din Mohammad Hanif, and Abdul Haq Wasiq.

In addition, officials responsible for sectors such as agriculture, public works, transport, religious affairs, and disaster management are also listed. The sanctions mean these individuals face limits on international travel and financial activities.

At the same time, the committee added one new individual to the list. Azizur Rahman Abdul Ahad, who serves as the third secretary at the Taliban embassy in the United Arab Emirates, was included in the latest update.

Dozens of Officials Removed From the List

While some names remain under sanctions, the revised document also shows that at least 39 Taliban officials have been removed compared to last year’s list. Among those removed are several senior figures and advisers who were previously sanctioned.

These include individuals linked to various Taliban ministries as well as advisers connected to the leadership. Some deputy ministers and regional officials were also taken off the sanctions list.

Observers say the update reflects ongoing monitoring by the United Nations of the Taliban leadership and its administrative structure. They note that while some restrictions have been lifted for certain officials, many key figures remain under international sanctions.

Overall, the revised sanctions list shows that the international community continues to keep a close watch on the Taliban leadership and its activities.
