WASHINGTON- APRIL,4 – U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed a major expansion in defense spending, requesting a $500 billion increase for fiscal year 2027 that would bring the total military budget to approximately $1.5 trillion.
The proposal also includes a 10% reduction in non-defense federal programs, alongside significant cuts to several government agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Agriculture, and NASA.
According to the budget outline released on Friday, NASA funding would be reduced by around 23%, while the EPA could face a 52% cut and the Department of Agriculture a 19% reduction. The announcement comes just days after NASA launched a major Artemis mission to the Moon.
The White House compared the proposed defense spending level to military buildups seen prior to World War II, describing it as part of a broader effort to strengthen U.S. military readiness. The plan also includes a 5% to 7% pay increase for active-duty military personnel.
However, the proposal faces significant political uncertainty in Congress, where previous spending disputes have contributed to government shutdowns. Leading Democrats have criticized the plan as unworkable, calling it a “doomed” proposal.
In addition to defense priorities, the budget includes funding for several high-profile projects, including the reopening of Alcatraz prison, major beautification efforts in Washington, D.C., and initial financing for a new “Trump-class” battleship under a $65.8 billion shipbuilding program.
The proposal is expected to face intense debate in the coming months as lawmakers review its scope and funding priorities.
