Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, highlighted the country’s longstanding role during a briefing at the UN Security Council. He stated that Pakistan has remained among the largest troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions for over six decades. More than 250,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have served in 48 missions worldwide, earning international recognition for their professionalism.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad revealed that 182 Pakistani personnel have sacrificed their lives under the UN flag in the pursuit of global peace. He emphasized that Pakistan places the highest priority on the safety and security of its personnel. Expressing deep concern over recent attacks on peacekeepers—particularly the growing trend of targeting Indonesian and Bangladeshi personnel—he stressed that accountability for such crimes is essential to prevent future incidents.
Security Challenges
Briefing the Security Council, the Pakistani envoy noted that peacekeepers are currently operating in increasingly complex and difficult environments, where resources are shrinking while responsibilities continue to expand. He pointed to emerging threats from drones and other unconventional warfare tactics. He added that while the use of technology is important, it cannot replace the human presence on the ground, which remains essential for building trust and engagement with local communities.
Pakistan–Denmark Cooperation
Citing missions in the Central African Republic and Abyei, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad described peacekeeping operations as a cost-effective and efficient means of maintaining global stability. He noted that Pakistan and Denmark are working together as part of the “Peacekeeping Duo” to ensure that the Security Council remains focused on strengthening and securing peace missions. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to continuing its cooperation with the United Nations in promoting international peace and security.
