Beijing: Reports suggest that China may be preparing to supply Pakistan with its fifth generation J-35A stealth fighter aircraft. This development is expected to shift the military balance in the region and has triggered concern in India.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post, Chinese state broadcasting has highlighted preparations for the export version of the J-35A. Pakistan is being described as a potential first buyer of this advanced fighter jet.

In addition, Chinese television has shown footage of the export variant, known as J-35AE. The aircraft is seen equipped with a modern electro optical targeting system, which improves precision and combat capability.

Defence experts believe that Pakistan could receive around 40 aircraft under this defence package. However, official confirmation of the deal has not yet been made public.

Moving forward, analysts say this development reflects China’s broader strategy to compete with the United States in the export of high end military technology. Pakistan remains a long standing defence partner of China, with around 80 percent of its recent defence imports coming from Chinese suppliers.

Looking at recent regional tensions, analysts also refer to the 2025 Pakistan India conflict, where limitations of fourth generation aircraft were reportedly observed. Some defence commentators, including Christopher Clary, have pointed to the role of advanced air defence systems like India’s S 400 in that period.

In contrast, experts suggest that fifth generation aircraft could significantly improve Pakistan’s capability in deep strike and intelligence missions. They also cite examples such as Israel’s use of F 35 jets in advanced operations against modern air defence systems.

Finally, defence analysts warn that the introduction of such advanced technology in South Asia could increase the pace of the regional arms race. They also caution that it may raise the risk of misunderstandings during any future crisis.
