U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Admiral Cooper has given an important briefing on regional security before the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee. During the session, he strongly acknowledged Pakistan’s counterterrorism credentials, describing Islamabad as a reliable and indispensable partner in the fight against terrorism in the region.
Admiral Cooper stressed before the Senate committee that the primary source of terrorism and instability in the region at present is extremist networks operating in Afghanistan and its surrounding areas. He openly stated that cross-border threats originating from Afghanistan pose a serious danger not only to regional countries but also to U.S. national security. This assessment effectively reinforces Pakistan’s long-standing position that safe havens for terrorists inside Afghanistan remain a persistent threat to regional peace.
Role against ISIS-K
During the briefing, the CENTCOM commander described Pakistan as an “important counterterrorism partner” in operations against ISIS-K, acknowledging Pakistan’s frontline role in the global fight against terrorism. He also warned that if pressure on counterterrorism efforts in the region is reduced, ISIS and affiliated groups could regroup and re-establish their strength in unstable areas of Afghanistan. He further expressed concern that Central Asian states are also facing growing instability due to these emerging threats from Afghanistan.
Military cooperation outcomes
Admiral Cooper also acknowledged that military and intelligence cooperation between Pakistan and the United States has produced “clear and far-reaching results” against high-value terrorist targets involved in attacks on U.S. forces. This assessment effectively rejects narratives suggesting Pakistan is part of the problem, instead presenting it as a key contributor to regional security frameworks.
Propaganda narrative challenged
According to defense observers, Admiral Cooper’s remarks represent another major international validation of Pakistan’s sacrifices, operational capabilities, and strategic role in counterterrorism. The statement also weakens ongoing information campaigns that attempt to isolate Pakistan diplomatically by diverting attention from real terrorist threats.
Pakistan’s strategic importance
Following these remarks, analysts note that it is increasingly difficult for the international community to ignore the reality that instability in Afghanistan directly impacts the entire region. In this evolving security environment, Pakistan’s geographical and strategic importance has once again become central, with CENTCOM continuing to rely on Islamabad’s cooperation for counterterrorism operations, operational access, and effective security outcomes.
