A large protest was held in front of the Norwegian Parliament in Oslo during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Norway on 18–19 May 2026, where Kashmiri, Sikh, and sections of the Pakistani diaspora expressed strong opposition to his policies.
The demonstration, organized by the Tehreek-e-Kashmir Norway and other community organizations, was attended by approximately 200 to 250 participants. Protesters raised concerns over alleged human rights violations in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, the influence of Hindutva ideology linked to the RSS, and reported treatment of minorities in India.
Speakers at the protest, including various political, social, and religious figures, criticized the policies of the Indian government and called on the international community, including Norway, to hold leadership accountable regarding human rights issues. Participants carried banners and chanted slogans demanding attention to Kashmir-related concerns.
Sikh Activists Also Stage Protest
Sikh activists associated with the Khalistan movement also demonstrated against the visit. They expressed concern over Modi being awarded a high state honour, the “Grand Cross,” during his visit. Protesters claimed that such recognition raises questions in light of ongoing tensions and reported issues affecting Sikh communities.
During the demonstration, Sikh participants displayed Khalistan flags and raised slogans demanding political accountability, while also voicing opposition to Modi’s visit.
Social Media Campaign and Media Attention
Alongside the protest, an online campaign was launched calling for awareness and boycott of the visit. Discussions also emerged in Norwegian media regarding press freedom rankings and transparency, with comparisons drawn between global media environments.
Organizers stated that they plan to expand awareness campaigns in coordination with civil society groups in the coming days.
