Kabul – 23 April 2025: Russia Taliban diplomatic ties grew stronger following a high-level meeting in Kabul on Wednesday between Russian envoy Zamir Kabulov and Taliban’s acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. The Taliban announced that Russia had agreed to accredit their nominated ambassador to serve in Moscow.

This marks Kabulov’s third visit to Afghanistan since the Taliban took control in August 2021. He had previously visited Kabul in January 2023 and November 2024. Taliban sources stated that the nominated ambassador would soon be dispatched to Moscow.

The Russia Taliban diplomatic ties meeting focused on boosting bilateral relations, expanding trade and economic engagement, and resolving regional issues. The Taliban welcomed what they claimed was Russia’s decision to remove the group from its list of terrorist organizations.

A statement released by the Taliban quoted Kabulov as saying that Russia is keen to eliminate “barriers to cooperation” and promote closer ties. Both sides reportedly agreed to explore new avenues for regional stability and joint development.

Further strengthening Russia Taliban diplomatic ties, Kabulov proposed holding a special meeting during next month’s Kazan Forum. The aim would be to establish a permanent bilateral commission between the two governments.

While the Russian government has not publicly confirmed the Taliban’s claims, these developments signal a growing engagement between Moscow and Kabul. It also suggests that Russia is deepening ties with Afghanistan amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the region.

Observers note that this move could encourage other nations to reassess their diplomatic stance toward Afghanistan under Taliban rule.
