Kabul – 25 April 2025: Afghan-Trans railway project has advanced after Afghanistan and Uzbekistan agreed to begin feasibility studies for the regional transport corridor this week.

According Public Works Ministry, Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister for Railways signed the agreement during an official visit to Uzbekistan. Spokesperson Ashraf Haqshenas confirmed the deal with Uzbekistan’s Railway Authority, emphasizing regional trade opportunities.

Both sides also extended the operation and maintenance contract of the Hairatan–Mazar-e-Sharif railway line for two years. They also agreed to conduct the design and survey work on the Herat–Mazar-e-Sharif railway line.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar discussed the Afghan-Trans railway project with Uzbekistan’s foreign minister in a phone call. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Dar expressed hope for a trilateral deal among Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan.

Economic analyst Abdul Nasir Rashtia urged the Islamic Emirate to seize this opportunity, saying the project can turn Afghanistan into a key transit hub. He emphasized removing logistical barriers and restoring investor confidence.

Abdul Zohur Modabber, another analyst, emphasized the availability of skilled labor and local capital in Afghanistan. He said that with stronger international ties, even liquidity challenges can be resolved to support the project.

Earlier, Russia’s special envoy confirmed interim Afghan officials will attend the upcoming Kazan Forum. They are expected to discuss the proposed 573-kilometer Afghan-Trans railway route and related regional connectivity initiatives.

Experts believe this initiative could transform Afghanistan’s role in regional trade by linking South and Central Asia through strategic railway infrastructure.
