KABUL _ 14 April: The acting head of Pakistan’s embassy in Kabul, Obaidur Rehman Nizamani, met with Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Maulvi Amir Khan Muttaqi to discuss a range of political and economic issues. Afghan FM Muttaqi meets Pakistani envoy and the meeting came amid growing tensions between the two neighboring countries over the treatment of Afghan refugees in Pakistan.
During the talks, FM Muttaqi voiced his concerns over the forced deportations of Afghan refugees and what he described as inappropriate treatment by some Pakistani authorities. He called the ongoing mistreatment “provocative” and warned that such actions could harm the relationship between the two nations.
Muttaqi urged Pakistan to reassess its current handling of the refugee issue and to uphold the dignity and rights of Afghans living across the border. He stressed that trust and cooperation must guide bilateral relations, especially during sensitive times.
In response, Nizamani acknowledged Afghanistan’s concerns and assured the Afghan side that he would convey the message to the relevant authorities in Islamabad. He reiterated Pakistan’s interest in maintaining stable and constructive relations with Afghanistan.
The two sides concluded the meeting by agreeing on the need for effective, mutual measures to address challenges and enhance cooperation. They also underscored the importance of increasing high-level delegation exchanges to build trust and improve diplomatic coordination.
This meeting comes as both countries continue to navigate regional security, trade, and migration issues that impact millions on both sides of the Durand Line.
