ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and Afghanistan are set to resume peace talks on Wednesday in Urumqi, China, marking an important step toward easing tensions between the two neighbors. The meeting will be hosted and mediated by China after weeks of diplomatic efforts to bring both sides back to the table.

According to diplomatic sources, this will be the first round of talks in the new phase of engagement. Chinese officials have invited both countries with what they describe as sincerity and neutrality. “China is committed to helping both sides find a peaceful and workable solution,” a source familiar with the process said.

Meanwhile, the meeting is expected to begin with a review of earlier discussions held in Qatar, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. Officials will look at what progress was made and where challenges remain. This step is seen as important to build a clear path forward.

Focus on Tensions, Trust, and Future Mechanism

In the next stage, both sides will present their positions on key issues, including border tensions and security concerns. Delegations are likely to include officials from foreign affairs, defense, and security institutions, showing the seriousness of the talks.

Chinese mediators will then work to develop a mutually acceptable and verifiable mechanism to address ongoing disputes. “The goal is not just dialogue, but a system that ensures commitments are followed,” another diplomatic source said.

At the same time, analysts believe this initiative reflects China’s growing role in regional diplomacy. “Reducing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan is vital for regional stability,” an expert noted, adding that peaceful ties can also support trade and connectivity in the region.

Looking ahead, both countries are expected to continue engagement if this round shows progress. Observers say sustained dialogue and trust-building steps will be key to long-term peace. For now, the Urumqi talks offer a fresh opportunity to move away from conflict and toward cooperation.
