Several people were killed and others injured after a powerful explosion and fire ripped through a bar during New Year’s celebrations in Crans-Montana, Swiss police said on Wednesday.

The blast occurred at around 1:30am local time (00:30 GMT) at Le Constellation Bar, where New Year’s Eve celebrations were underway.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of a fire following the explosion. Authorities said the cause of the blast remains unknown and investigations are ongoing.

Unverified videos shared on social media showed flames engulfing part of the venue shortly after the explosion. Police confirmed that several people lost their lives, while others were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries.

A helpline has been set up for families seeking information about their loved ones. Officials said further details would be released as the investigation progresses.

Crans-Montana is a well-known luxury ski resort in the Swiss Alps, located about two hours from Bern, and is a popular destination during the holiday season.
