Iran and Russia have reportedly reached an agreement on the purchase of Russia’s advanced S-400 air defence system, with deliveries to Iran expected in the near future, according to British newspaper The Telegraph.
The report said recent visits by Russian President and Iranian officials involved discussions on defence cooperation and a proposed new gas pipeline between the two countries.
According to The Telegraph, Russia had indicated its willingness to sell the S-400 system to Iran for several years. However, concerns over relations with Israel and other countries in the region had previously prevented progress on the deal.
The newspaper reported that Iran has recently signed several arms supply agreements with Russia. These deals are reportedly part of Tehran’s long-term defence plans to strengthen its military capabilities in the event of a possible conflict with the United States.
The report also revealed that Russia is producing missiles for Iran that can be launched from helicopters.
The visit of Iranian National Security Council official Mohsen Rezaei to Moscow has also raised questions over US President Donald Trump’s claim that Russia is not assisting Iran, the report added.
