US President Donald Trump has accused Democratic leaders of seeking political revenge and threatening Republican lawmakers and their supporters. He has announced plans to direct the Department of Justice to investigate their alleged criminal activities.

Trump claimed that Democrats were using the law as a weapon against political opponents and threatening to send Republican officials and their supporters to prison.

In a statement, the US president said Democratic leaders were threatening several individuals with impeachment and other penalties. He also criticised what he described as unjustified impeachment threats against the attorney general and other officials.

Democrats of Political Retaliation

Trump described the Democrats’ alleged conduct as “high-level extortion” and said those responsible should be held accountable.

He further claimed that Republican donors were being targeted solely because of their political affiliations. According to Trump, Republican lawmakers and their supporters had also faced threats of imprisonment.

The president also referred to Senator Elissa Slotkin, accusing her of targeting young people who hold Republican political views.

Trump said individuals making illegal threats should face legal consequences.

DOJ Investigation

Trump also alleged that Democratic leaders had sent threatening letters to innocent individuals.

He announced that he would direct the Department of Justice to immediately investigate the Democrats’ alleged criminal activities.

However, his statement did not provide further details about the proposed investigation, its scope or the individuals who could be investigated.
