Seoul, South Korea — A South Korean court on 28 January 2026 sentenced Kim Keon‑hee, the country’s former First Lady, to 20 months in prison after finding her guilty of accepting bribes in connection with the controversial Unification Church, according to reports from multiple outlets including Reuters and Sky News.
The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Kim, the wife of former President Yoon Suk‑yeol, accepted luxury gifts — including a Chanel handbag and a Graff diamond necklace — from officials linked to the Unification Church in exchange for political favors.
Prosecutors had sought a 15‑year prison term and heavy fines over multiple allegations, but the court cleared her of stock price manipulation and violations of political funding laws due to lack of sufficient evidence.
During the televised verdict, Judge Woo In‑sung said Kim’s position close to the presidency gave her significant influence, which she allegedly used for personal gain. “One’s position must never become a means of pursuing private gain,” the court stated.
Kim, 53, has denied all charges, and her legal team said they would review the verdict and consider an appeal.
This case marks the first time in South Korea’s history that both a former president and First Lady have received prison sentences related to corruption. Former President Yoon was previously jailed for five years over actions connected to his failed attempt to impose martial law in 2024 and related legal challenges.
The Unification Church has rejected claims that it offered gifts in return for political favors, and its leader is also facing trial.
