Baghdad— Pakistan and Iraq have agreed to strengthen cooperation against extremism, terrorism and narcotics trafficking during a high-level meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Iraqi President Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid in Baghdad.
President Zardari received a guard of honor at the Baghdad Palace before holding one-on-one and delegation level talks with the Iraqi leadership.
Strong commitment against terrorism
Both Presidents reaffirmed their resolve to combat terrorism and extremist networks that threaten regional stability.
They stressed that Pakistan and Iraq face similar security challenges and must work together to counter militancy, cross-border extremist movements and narcotics smuggling.
President Zardari said Pakistan firmly supports Iraq’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity and remains committed to Iraq’s stability and peace.
The Iraqi President appreciated Pakistan’s role in uniting the Muslim world and its longstanding support for the people of Palestine.
He noted that security cooperation between the two brotherly nations is essential for regional peace.
The leaders agreed to enhance intelligence sharing, strengthen counter-terror coordination and work together at forums like the UN and OIC.
Expanding bilateral cooperation
President Zardari praised the warm welcome extended by Iraq and described Baghdad as a historic symbol of resilience.
He congratulated the Iraqi leadership on the successful parliamentary elections and expressed hope for the smooth formation of the new government.
Both sides reviewed bilateral ties and welcomed the positive momentum created by the recent session of the Pakistan-Iraq Joint Ministerial Commission.
President Zardari highlighted opportunities in trade, agriculture, defence production, IT, construction and pharmaceuticals and called for direct banking channels to support business links.
He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s readiness to support Iraq’s reconstruction by sending skilled workers and sharing expertise in health, finance and digital governance.
President Zardari requested better facilities for Pakistani pilgrims and sought early finalization of the agreement on Zaireen Management.
Both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation across political, economic and social areas and maintain close coordination on issues of mutual interest.
