Islamabad — Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to introduce a pre‑immigration clearance system that aims to make travel smoother and faster for Pakistani passengers bound for the Gulf nation, according to official statements reported by Dawn and Business Recorder.
During a meeting between Mohsin Naqvi, Federal Minister for Interior of Pakistan, and Ahmed bin Lahij Al Falasi, Director General of Customs and Port Security of the UAE, both sides reached consensus to sign a formal agreement to implement the new system.
Pre‑Immigration Clearance to Begin on Pilot Basis
Under the planned arrangement, Pakistani travelers will be able to complete necessary immigration and related checks before departure from Pakistan. This will allow them to bypass traditional long immigration queues upon arrival in the UAE and move through entry points more efficiently, officials said.
The first phase of the system is expected to begin on a pilot basis in Karachi, with plans for expansion to additional cities if the pilot proves successful. Authorities described the system as a practical and people‑centric enhancement to existing travel services.
Enhancing Bilateral Cooperation and People‑to‑People Connectivity
Officials from both Pakistan and the UAE highlighted that the initiative reflects stronger bilateral cooperation and shared commitment to facilitating mobility for students, workers, business travelers, and families. They noted that millions of Pakistani citizens live, work, or frequently travel to the UAE, making efficient immigration processes a priority.
In addition to simplifying entry procedures, partners emphasized that the arrangement is part of broader efforts to support legal travel and enhance people‑to‑people ties between the two countries. Leaders on both sides spoke of the agreement as a symbol of enduring friendship and mutual respect.
Next Steps Toward Implementation
While the formal signing of the agreement is still forthcoming, discussions have reached an advanced stage, and officials on both sides expressed optimism about a swift rollout. When implemented, the pre‑immigration clearance system is expected to benefit a wide range of travelers and strengthen transportation cooperation between Islamabad and Abu Dhabi.
