Islamabad, January 19, 2026 – A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck northwestern Kashmir today at 11:21 PST, originating at a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was recorded at 36.80°N latitude and 74.42°E longitude, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The tremors were felt across Gilgit-Baltistan, Peshawar, and neighboring areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. While authorities are still assessing the situation, residents reported noticeable shaking in buildings and a temporary disruption in daily activities.

PMD officials advised residents in affected regions to remain alert and follow safety precautions, especially in areas with older buildings or vulnerable infrastructure. No immediate reports of casualties or major damage have been confirmed as of now.

The earthquake highlights the seismic activity in the northwestern Kashmir region, which lies along fault lines prone to tectonic movements. Authorities continue to monitor aftershocks and ensure the readiness of local emergency services.
