The Minister of Interior Affairs of Afghanistan, Sirajuddin Haqqani, has held talks with a visiting United Nations delegation led by Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs on improving Afghanistan’s engagement with the international community.
According to an official statement, the meeting covered cooperation in combating narcotics, strengthening economic stability, easing restrictions on the private sector and improving the effectiveness of UN-led humanitarian assistance.
Haqqani told the delegation that serious and practical steps have been taken against the cultivation, production and trafficking of narcotics, saying these efforts have produced positive results.
Both sides also discussed the need for constructive and realistic engagement, stressing that mutual respect could help build trust and expand cooperation under current conditions.
The UN delegation praised the security situation and progress in the fight against drugs and reaffirmed its commitment to continued humanitarian support for Afghanistan.
It was also announced that under the third phase of the UN-led Doha process on Afghanistan, the next meeting of the working groups formed under this framework will be held in Kabul hosted by Afghanistan.
However, the engagement comes amid continued international concern. Recent UN and UN Security Council monitoring reports have repeatedly warned that more than 20 terrorist organizations, including ISKP, continue to operate inside Afghanistan.
These reports have also expressed serious concern over the risk of Afghan soil being used for regional and international terrorist activities, making counterterrorism assurances a key issue in Afghanistan’s ongoing dialogue with the world.
