Islamabad: U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated Pakistan as a preferred venue for upcoming talks with Iran, saying that progress may be expected within the next two days, while Iranian officials have also named Pakistan as their first choice for the second round of negotiations.
According to the New York Post, Trump said in an interview, “Just stay there because something may happen in the next two days, and we are more inclined to go to Pakistan.” He also praised Pakistan’s role in the negotiations and described Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir’s performance as “excellent.”
Trump said that due to Field Marshal Asim Munir’s efforts, the United States is once again considering holding talks in Pakistan. However, reports suggest that Trump initially denied the possibility of talks in Pakistan but later re-engaged, indicating a possible meeting in Islamabad.
On the other hand, Iranian officials also told Geo News that Iran is ready for negotiations, but the position of the other side is still unclear. They said that if a second round of talks takes place, Pakistan will remain their top priority.
According to Reuters, sources said that US and Iranian delegations may arrive in Islamabad again this week for peace talks. A Pakistani-based Iranian embassy official also indicated that the next round of talks is expected this week or early next week.
Sources further said that Pakistan has intensified backdoor diplomacy to reduce tensions between the US and Iran, while maintaining continuous contact with regional and global powers to advance the negotiation process.
It is important to note that diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between Iran and the United States have recently intensified, with Pakistan emerging as a potential mediator.
