Afghanistan’s former prime minister and leader of the Hezb-e-Islami party Gulbuddin Hekmatyar has declared the current Taliban government unacceptable and called for the immediate holding of transparent national elections in the country. According to Afghan media reports, Hekmatyar said the current situation does not reflect the aspirations of the Afghan people and urgent reforms are needed to pull the country out of crisis.
Objections Over Absence of Constitutional System
The former prime minister strongly criticized the Taliban leadership, stating that essential elements such as a constitution and representative councils are completely absent in the current system. He stressed that lasting political stability requires the inclusion of public opinion, warning that otherwise uncertainty and unrest will continue to grow. He said the present political structure fails to represent the true will of the Afghan people.
Political Parties React
The Hezb-e Wahdat-e Islami party also took a strong stance, stating that political leaders in exile will not return unless a system based on public mandate is established. It warned that if conditions do not change, the Taliban will be responsible for any future crisis in the country.
Analysts’ View
Political observers believe that increasing demands for systemic change are emerging even from within Afghanistan due to the Taliban administration’s rigid policies. Hekmatyar’s latest statement is seen as a significant political challenge to the current governing structure.
