Kabul – 29 April 2025: Afghanistan journalist awards were announced by the Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC), recognizing five outstanding media professionals for 2025.

Award recipients include Nasrin Saidy from Radio Sarhad, Mohammad Yusuf Mengal from Pajhwok News Agency, and Azizullah Wahdat from Tamadon TV. Also honored were Ramin Mazhar from Afghanistan International TV and independent journalist Ehsanullah Karimi.

AFJC Executive Director Ahmed Qureshi praised these winners, emphasizing the risks Afghan reporters face daily since the Taliban returned to power. He highlighted their resilience and dedication to free reporting amid increasing restrictions.

Qureshi noted that more than 50 local and international media outlets participated in the competition, reflecting strong journalistic engagement across Afghanistan. He called the turnout a sign of hope for press freedom in the country.

Belgian officials and international guests at the event stressed the importance of protecting free expression. They reiterated that Afghan journalists play a vital role in promoting human rights and democracy, despite rising suppression.

The Afghanistan journalist awards have been held annually since 2013. Since inception, 22 reporters from diverse media platforms have earned this prestigious recognition.

This year’s awards showcase the courage, commitment, and skill of journalists reporting under hostile conditions. Their work provides critical insights into Afghanistan’s rapidly evolving political and social landscape.

Despite mounting dangers, Afghan media professionals continue to operate with courage and integrity. These awards offer recognition, encouragement, and global visibility to their essential contributions to society.

The AFJC reaffirmed its support for Afghan journalists and vowed to continue promoting freedom of the press in every province.
