The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres posted on X that the Security Council “stands alone in its authority to act on behalf of all member countries on questions of peace & security.”

Guterres reminded the world that the Council alone adopts binding decisions for all nations, and no ad-hoc coalition or other body can legally require compliance.

“It has a singular responsibility and a universal obligation,” he said, highlighting the Council’s unique powers in preventing conflicts and maintaining global order.

The Secretary-General stressed that reform is essential to improve representation and effectiveness. He urged immediate action to ensure that the Council can respond to contemporary security challenges, including regional conflicts, cyber threats, and climate-related instability.

Experts note that reforming the Security Council could make it more inclusive while preserving its ability to act decisively in crises. Guterres’ post reflects ongoing debates among UN member states about how to modernize the world’s top peacekeeping body.
