Badakhshan, Afghanistan – The Badakhshan Public Health Department has reported a worsening child malnutrition crisis in the province, affecting nearly 16,000 children over the past 11 months. According to the report, more than 60 children have lost their lives due to severe malnutrition. The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed these figures and called the situation “critical,” emphasizing that immediate interventions are necessary to prevent further fatalities.

Officials cited multiple contributing factors, including food insecurity, limited access to healthcare facilities, economic challenges faced by families, and ongoing regional instability. They warned that if left unaddressed, the crisis could lead to an increase in malnutrition-related diseases and additional child deaths.

Emergency response programs have been launched, including therapeutic nutrition centers, distribution of nutrient-rich food packages, and parental education on child nutrition. Local authorities have also appealed for international support to strengthen these initiatives.

Experts note that the malnutrition crisis in Badakhshan is not only driven by immediate food shortages but also by structural challenges such as persistent poverty, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and limited community awareness of proper child nutrition. They stress that while short-term relief is essential to save lives, sustainable development programs are needed to address the root causes of malnutrition.

WHO has issued a stern warning that without urgent measures, child mortality in Badakhshan could rise in the coming months. The agency has called on the global community to increase both emergency and long-term support for vulnerable children and families in the province.

The malnutrition situation in Badakhshan underscores the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian and development efforts. Immediate relief, combined with structural interventions, is critical to prevent further suffering among children in the region.
