KABUL/ISLAMABAD — Afghan authorities have accused Pakistani forces at the Spin Boldak check post of opening fire, claiming that the incident caused panic among Afghan civilians at the border, resulting in two fatalities and two injuries.

Chaman Border Exchange

Firing was also reported at the Chaman-Wesh border, connecting Balochistan and Kandahar. Local sources stated that the exchange of fire has since ceased, with no further casualties reported. However, the incident created widespread fear among local populations. Movement along the Pak-Afghan border was temporarily suspended following the firing but resumed once conditions stabilized.

Diplomatic Continuity Despite Tensions

Experts in diplomacy highlighted that, despite border tensions, the ongoing Istanbul negotiations represent a significant diplomatic development. They warned, however, that any adverse incident along the border could undermine both local stability and the progress of the negotiation process.

The third round of the Istanbul talks continued under mediator supervision for 13 hours, with both sides agreeing to maintain diplomatic channels and dialogue despite the border skirmishes. The fourth round of Pak-Afghan Istanbul negotiations is scheduled to begin on Friday. Sources indicate that if meaningful progress is achieved, the “Istanbul Process” or an “Istanbul Declaration” could be announced.

Pakistan Denies Afghan Claims

The Pakistani Ministry of Information has rejected all Afghan claims regarding the Chaman border incident. According to the ministry, the firing originated from the Afghan side near Bab-e-Dosti, targeting Pakistani check posts, prompting a responsive action from Pakistani forces. Officials confirmed that the ceasefire remains intact and full peace and security have been maintained.
