Nuristan – 23 April2025: Work has officially begun on development projects in Nuristan, as 58 initiatives launch in Mandol district with UN financial backing. According to local officials, the development projects in Nuristan include new roads and eleven agricultural canals, boosting regional infrastructure. The projects carry a total budget of 90 million afghani, funded by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

Ehsanullah Ahmad, head of Rural Rehabilitation and Development in Nuristan, said implementation will follow strict technical guidelines. “The World Food Programme is overseeing technical work, while our department manages the implementation,” he confirmed.

The projects aim to provide jobs for hundreds of people, particularly youth, in remote parts of western Nuristan.

Faraydoon Samim, spokesperson for the provincial governor, said: “These projects will improve access to Panjshir and Laghman provinces.”

The development projects in Nuristan are expected to transform transportation and agricultural infrastructure in Mandol and nearby districts. Local residents expressed hope and appreciation for the ongoing construction work, calling for more investment in the region.

Faizur Rahman, a Mandol resident, told TOLOnews, “Ten thousand people will benefit from the planned road project.” He noted that people previously depended on animals for transportation across the district’s rugged terrain.

Another resident, Juma Gul, added, “Earlier, we used to go to Iran for jobs—now, there’s work here like never before.”

These projects follow recent approval of two hydroelectric dam constructions in nearby Nurgram by the Islamic Emirate’s leadership. This coordinated development effort marks a significant step toward improving local livelihoods and long-term regional connectivity.
