Islamabad, May 20, 2025 — In a landmark decision, the federal cabinet on Tuesday approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir to the prestigious rank of Field Marshal. This recognition comes in light of his exceptional leadership during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and the recent military confrontation with India, referred to as Marka-i-Haq.
A Historic Military Promotion
General Munir becomes the second officer in Pakistan’s history to receive the highest rank in the army, following in the footsteps of General Mohammad Ayub Khan, who was promoted in 1959. The cabinet’s decision, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, followed a comprehensive review of General Munir’s leadership in recent strategic military operations.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the decision honors General Munir’s successful strategic planning and courageous actions during a period of heightened tension with India. His leadership, particularly in Marka-i-Haq, resulted in a “historic victory” for Pakistan and reaffirmed the nation’s military strength.
Acknowledging the War Effort
The cabinet also approved state awards for Pakistan Army officers, soldiers, martyrs, and citizens for their valuable contributions during the military campaign. The PMO emphasized that the recognition extends to the collective efforts of the armed forces and the resilience of the nation.
President Asif Ali Zardari fully endorsed the cabinet’s decision. He praised General Munir for defending Pakistan’s sovereignty with outstanding military strategy and bravery, especially during the Indian air strikes in Punjab and Azad Kashmir earlier this month.
General Munir’s Career and Response
Commissioned through the Officers Training School Mangla, General Munir has served in several critical roles, including Military Intelligence and ISI chief, Corps Commander Gujranwala, and Quartermaster General at the General Headquarters. Promoted to a three-star general in 2018, he assumed the COAS role later that year.
In response to his promotion, General Munir expressed deep gratitude and dedicated the honor to the armed forces, martyrs, veterans, and the nation. “This is not my individual achievement but the collective trust of the people and the military,” he said in a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
Sidhu’s Tenure Extended
The cabinet also extended the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zahar Ahmed Babar Sidhu, citing his dedicated service and strategic contributions to national defense.
Field Marshal Asim Munir’s elevation marks a defining moment in Pakistan’s military history, underscoring the importance of exceptional leadership during national crises.
