ISLAMABAD, May 22, 2025 — Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Gohar Ali Khan congratulated Field Marshal Munir on his elevation, urging him to take greater responsibility in stabilizing the national situation. Speaking outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail after visiting imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Gohar emphasized the need for reconciliation and dialogue.
PTI Calls for Role in National Reconciliation
Gohar stated that the military’s influence in Pakistan remains undeniable and called on Field Marshal Munir to actively contribute to easing the country’s political turmoil. “With this new honor comes greater responsibility to improve conditions,” he said, acknowledging the rank’s symbolic weight.
Gohar dismissed claims of a rift between PTI and the military, reiterating the party’s desire for open communication. He added, “Imran Khan has always stood with the armed forces. We are ready to engage in dialogue for the country’s betterment.”
Strategic Recognition Amid Rising Tensions
Earlier this week, the federal government approved General Asim Munir’s promotion to field marshal—Pakistan’s highest military rank—citing his “strategic leadership” during a confrontation with India that ended through a US-brokered ceasefire. The government also extended the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, granting him a second, indefinite extension.
Significance and Legal Framework of the Promotion
The Defence Ministry issued the notification under Rule 199A of the Army Regulations (1998), which allows the government to promote any general—retired or serving—without regard to seniority or a specific role. While the Constitution and Army Act remain silent on such a promotion, analysts say the move is more symbolic than operational.
Experts believe that promoting General Munir during regional tensions sends a strong message of unity and control. Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed noted that the field marshal now holds a central place in Pakistan’s power structure, especially amid the fragmentation of civilian political forces.
Gohar also addressed lingering hostilities with India, describing the recent confrontation as more serious than the wars of 1965 or 1971 due to the nuclear status of both nations. He praised the military’s performance and urged national unity against potential threats.
Historically, countries like India and the UK have awarded field marshal ranks for ceremonial purposes. The promotion of Field Marshal Munir, like that of General Ayub Khan in 1959, aligns with global practices where such titles honor leadership rather than altering military command structures.
