Recent reports indicate that by 2035, nearly half of the global population — approximately four billion people — could be living with overweight or obesity. Health experts describe this projection as a major public health challenge that may place enormous pressure on healthcare systems and national economies worldwide.

The findings emphasize that the issue is not confined to adults. Childhood obesity has also risen sharply. Since 1975, obesity rates among school-age children have increased nearly fivefold, highlighting a troubling long-term trend. Specialists warn that if preventive measures are not strengthened, future generations may face higher risks of chronic diseases at younger ages.

Experts link the rise in obesity to modern lifestyle changes, including decreased physical activity, increased consumption of processed and high-calorie foods, urbanization, and greater reliance on technology. Obesity significantly increases the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

In response to this growing crisis, World Obesity Day has been observed annually on March 4 since 2020. The day aims to raise awareness, encourage healthier habits, and urge governments and communities to adopt effective policies that promote better nutrition and active living.

Health professionals stress that addressing obesity requires coordinated efforts from families, schools, healthcare providers, and policymakers to ensure a healthier future for the next generation.
