Singapore, 30th May 2025 – Amid rising India Pakistan military tensions, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (JCSC), has issued a grave warning about the risk of future escalation. He highlighted that the recent military standoff between the two nuclear-armed neighbors is more alarming than previous conflicts, particularly due to its reach beyond the traditionally disputed regions.
Escalation Beyond Conflict Zones
Speaking at a press briefing, General Sahir Shamshad stated that since April 22, the nature of conflict between Pakistan and India has changed significantly. Previously, military tensions were mostly confined to the Kashmir region. However, this time, the situation has dangerously extended to the international border. This escalation, according to him, sets a dangerous precedent for the future.
He revealed that both nations’ armed forces are now returning to their pre-conflict military deployment levels along the border. The reduction process has already begun, indicating a slight easing of immediate tensions. Nonetheless, the general maintained that the threat of future confrontations remains critical.
Risk of Nuclear Escalation
Although nuclear weapons were not used during the latest conflict, General Mirza pointed out that the situation was exceptionally risky. For the first time in recent history, the fighting involved attacks on military installations within the mainland territories of both countries. This breach of previous norms has raised alarms within regional and international security circles.
He warned that future hostilities may not remain limited to the Kashmir dispute. Instead, they could engulf entire territories, turning isolated military confrontations into full-scale national warfare. “This is a very dangerous trend,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for urgent diplomatic efforts.
No Communication Between Military Leadership
Despite the intensity of the crisis, there were no back-channel or informal communications initiated between the two countries, General Mirza disclosed. When asked about potential talks with General Anil Chauhan, India’s Chief of Defence Staff, he firmly responded, “There are no such plans.”
In conclusion, General Sahir Shamshad’s comments serve as a stark reminder of the fragile state of peace in South Asia. With India Pakistan military tensions escalating beyond traditional limits, the region stands at a critical crossroads.
