PESHAWAR, May 25, 2025 — A 5.3-magnitude KP earthquake jolted multiple cities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed. The quake originated at a depth of 230 kilometers, with its epicenter located in the seismically active Hindukush region.
Widespread Tremors Felt Across KP
Residents in Mardan, Swat, Swabi, Abbottabad, and surrounding areas experienced the tremors. Despite the intensity, authorities reported no casualties or structural damages. “We have not received any reports of injuries or destruction so far,” said Anwar Shahzad, spokesperson for the KP Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
Recent Seismic Activity in the Region
This event follows last month’s 4.4-magnitude earthquake, which rattled Swat and nearby localities. That quake originated at a depth of 185 kilometers, also centered in the Hindukush. Earlier this year, on April 12, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Islamabad and Rawalpindi, with tremors extending into parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Seismologists note that Pakistan has witnessed approximately 20 low-intensity earthquakes in the first half of February alone, averaging over one tremor daily. Geological engineer Muhammad Rehan explained that these minor quakes act as natural pressure releases along the tectonic plates, potentially reducing the risk of more powerful earthquakes.
Geological Context and Expert Insights
Pakistan lies at the convergence of three major tectonic plates: Arabian, Euro-Asian, and Indian. This geological setting creates five distinct seismic zones across the country, making KP and the Hindukush region especially prone to earthquakes.
Officials continue monitoring the situation closely and urge residents to stay alert but calm. The KP earthquake serves as a reminder of the region’s ongoing seismic activity and the importance of preparedness.
