Islamabad – 27 February 2026 – The Taliban-controlled government of Afghanistan has issued a nationwide security alert, ostensibly in response to warnings from Pakistan regarding potential retaliatory action against cross-border terrorist activity. Officials in Islamabad and security analysts say the alert underscores the ongoing inability of the Afghan regime to prevent its territory from being used as a base for attacks against Pakistan.

According to the Afghan announcement, authorities claim to be monitoring the situation, strengthening border management, and advising citizens to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and report suspicious activity. However, experts highlight that despite such measures, Afghan soil continues to serve as a safe haven for militant groups, including factions of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which have repeatedly conducted attacks across the border.

Pakistan maintains that its defensive and intelligence-driven operations are targeted solely at identified militant networks and carried out in full compliance with international norms. Islamabad emphasizes that the responsibility for preventing cross-border attacks rests with the Taliban-led Afghan authorities, whose ongoing permissiveness endangers both regional stability and the safety of Pakistani citizens.

This development highlights the fragile security environment along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and reinforces Islamabad’s stance on the necessity of decisive counterterrorism measures. Observers note that while Afghan citizens are urged to follow safety instructions, meaningful enforcement against militants remains the core challenge—a challenge that the Taliban government has repeatedly failed to address.
