Pakistan and China have signed three important memoranda of understanding to expand bilateral economic cooperation, focusing on seawater desalination, modern agricultural technology, and the development of the tea industry.

The agreements were signed during the official visit of Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari, who is currently on a week-long tour of China and attended the signing ceremony.

According to a spokesperson, the main objective of the agreements is to address water scarcity in major cities like Karachi and to introduce modern farming techniques in Pakistan.

Key Projects Under the Agreements

The first agreement was signed between the Government of Sindh’s local government department and China’s Lucion Environmental Technology Group. Under this project, a major initiative will be launched to convert seawater into potable water for Karachi.

A second agreement focuses on agricultural development through cooperation with Long Ping High-Tech Information Company, aimed at improving farming productivity through advanced technology.

The third partnership was signed with Hunan Tea Group to promote self-sufficiency and development in Pakistan’s tea industry.

Additional Engagements

During the ceremony, President Zardari also conferred Pakistan’s civil award, the “Sitara-e-Pakistan,” on Chinese heart disease specialist Professor Pan Xiangbin for his outstanding medical services.

The president also met with officials of the Communist Party of China and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to benefiting from China’s expertise in seed technology and modern agricultural machinery.
