Leaders Discuss Expansion of Economic and Regional Cooperation
Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with Uzbekistan during a high level meeting in Islamabad. President Asif Ali Zardari met with Uzbekistan’s Ambassador Ali Sher Takhteyev to discuss ways to improve trade, investment, and regional connectivity between the two countries.
During the meeting, both sides agreed on the importance of expanding economic cooperation. They highlighted that stronger trade links and better regional access can bring long term benefits for both nations. In addition, they stressed the need to explore new opportunities for investment that can support economic growth.
Meanwhile, the discussion also focused on regional connectivity, which remains a key priority for both countries.
Trans Afghan Railway Project Gains Strong Support
A major point of the meeting was the Trans Afghan Railway project, which aims to connect Central and South Asia through improved rail infrastructure. President Zardari described the project as highly important for regional trade and connectivity.
Furthermore, he reiterated Pakistan’s full support for the initiative and directed relevant authorities to finalize arrangements for his planned visit to Uzbekistan later this year. This step shows Pakistan’s intention to speed up cooperation on major infrastructure projects.
On the other side, the Uzbek ambassador appreciated Pakistan’s role in promoting regional peace and stability. He also expressed his country’s strong interest in deepening cooperation with Pakistan in multiple sectors.
In addition, both sides noted that recent years have seen steady progress in bilateral relations. They agreed that projects like the Trans Afghan Railway can play a key role in transforming regional trade routes.
Overall, the meeting reflected a shared vision for stronger economic partnership and improved regional connectivity, with both countries moving closer to long term strategic cooperation.
