The Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf rally in Muzaffarabad’s Lal Chowk has sparked debate over the party’s ground strength in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The event was part of a public outreach campaign directed by the party leadership. However, the turnout fell far below expectations.
According to local reports and widely shared images on social media, more than eleven hundred chairs were arranged at the venue. Yet even at the peak of the gathering, only around seven to eight hundred people were present. As a result, many chairs remained empty, creating a striking visual contrast.
Moreover, political opponents quickly pointed to the scene and claimed that there were more chairs than supporters. Some senior journalists also noted that despite the arrival of the Chief Minister by official helicopter, nearly half of the seating area remained unoccupied. This added further attention to the event’s low participation.
Political Impact and Questions on PTI’s Grassroots Reach
In addition, political observers say the rally has raised serious questions about PTI’s ability to mobilize crowds outside its traditional strongholds. The party has often projected large public gatherings as proof of popularity. However, the Muzaffarabad event presented a different picture on the ground.
Meanwhile, analysts believe the situation reflects a gap between online support and real world presence. While PTI remains active on social media and maintains strong digital engagement, converting that into physical turnout appears to be becoming more difficult in certain regions.
On the other hand, PTI supporters dismissed the criticism. They argued that selectively captured images were being used to misrepresent the event. Still, the visible empty chairs became the dominant symbol of the rally.
Furthermore, the incident has triggered debate about whether the party’s organizational structure in Azad Kashmir is weakening or simply under pressure due to current political conditions.
