May 13, 2025 – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday has scheduled the Punjab Senate seat election for May 29, 2025. The seat fell vacant upon demise of Senator Sajid Mir on May 3. A respected religious and political leader, Mir led Jamiat Ahle Hadith Pakistan and served multiple terms in the Senate, most recently elected on a PML-N ticket in 2021.

According to the ECP, candidates may file nomination papers on May 14 and 15. The commission will publish the list of nominees on May 16 and conduct scrutiny on May 17. Candidates may file appeals by May 20, and the commission will resolve them by May 22. It will release the revised list on May 23, while May 24 is the last date for candidates to withdraw. The polling will take place at the Punjab Assembly between 9 AM and 4 PM.

The Punjab Senate seat became vacant due to Mir’s death, prompting a fresh election in accordance with constitutional procedures. The ECP has urged transparency and timely participation from all parties involved.

In a similar event, the ECP held a by-election in Sindh on May 6. Syed Waqar Mehdi of the PPP won the seat with 111 votes, defeating MQM-P’s Nighat Mirza, who secured 36. The seat had become vacant after the passing of Senator Taj Haider on April 8.

As the date approaches, political observers closely watch the developments around the Punjab Senate seat contest, which holds symbolic and strategic value for major parties.
