Tirah: The second round of talks between militant groups and the Khyber Grand Jirga concluded in the Tirah Valley, marking a significant step in ongoing peace efforts in the region. The discussions brought together tribal elders and political leaders from Landi Kotal and Bara tehsils to address the escalating militant presence in the area.

Key Participants in the Jirga

According to details, the jirga included Malik Tajuddin, Mufti Ejaz, Malik Razaq Zakha Khel, Malik Tahir Khan, Malik Zair Ahmed Shah, Malik Khalid Khan, and Malik Parvez, along with leaders from the Bara Political Alliance. These representatives played a crucial mediating role between the militant factions and the local community.

Separate Meetings with Two Militant Factions

The jirga members held individual sessions with two major militant factions. The first phase of talks involved representatives of Hafiz Gul Bahadur Group, Lashkar-e-Islam, and Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, while the second phase focused on militants affiliated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Warning from Local Elders

Sources reported that local elders strongly urged both militant groups to withdraw from the region immediately. They cautioned that failure to do so would leave security forces with no option but to launch a military operation, which could cause severe harm to the civilian population.

Militant Response and Consideration of Withdrawal

In response, representatives of the militant groups stated that they were willing to consider an exit to prevent civilian suffering. However, they emphasized that a final decision would only be made after consulting with their senior commanders and leadership councils.

Earlier Demands for Sharia Enforcement

It is noteworthy that during the first round of talks held ten days earlier, the militant factions had demanded the implementation of Sharia law in the tribal districts.

Next Round Expected to Focus on Peace and Security

According to sources, the third phase of negotiations is expected to concentrate on establishing long-term law and order mechanisms and discussing the possible withdrawal of militant elements from the Tirah Valley. This stage is seen as pivotal for ensuring peace and stability in the restive Khyber District and adjacent tribal areas.
