Leicester Tigers delivered a powerful performance against Northampton Saints in a fiery East Midlands derby. The match was full of tension from the opening minutes. Players from both sides were involved in several heated moments and six cards were shown during the game. However Leicester stayed in control and secured a convincing 41-17 victory at Welford Road.
The Tigers were strong in the forwards and dominated the scrums and line-outs. Northampton struggled to keep possession and could not produce the attacking spark that had helped them in recent weeks. Leicester’s England stars stepped up at the right time. Jack van Poortvliet created a brilliant try for Adam Radwan while Freddie Steward crossed the line for Leicester’s sixth try of the afternoon.
Meanwhile James O’Connor impressed after coming into the side at short notice because of Billy Searle’s injury. His calm and creative display could become very important for Leicester in the final weeks of the season. As a result the Tigers are now just one point behind Bath and remain firmly in the race for a home semi-final.
At the same time Saracens continued their push for the playoffs with a strong 41-26 win over Bristol. The club’s younger players played a major role in the victory. Fergus Burke stood out with an exciting attacking display while teenager Noah Caluori once again impressed with his confidence and skill. Veteran Jamie George also showed his class with a clever pass that helped create a key try.
Because of these performances Saracens still have hope of reaching the top four. Although they remain sixth in the table the battle for the playoff places is becoming tighter with only a few rounds remaining.
Exeter’s smart signings shine as surprise results shake up the league
Exeter Chiefs also continued their impressive form with another important win. Director of rugby Rob Baxter has received praise for his recruitment decisions after several overseas signings delivered strong performances this season.
Australian centre Len Ikitau produced one of his best displays for the club against Bath. His attacking run helped Exeter take control in the second half. Fellow Australian Tom Hooper also played a big role in the victory with another hard-working performance in the forwards.
In addition players like Stephen Varney and Andrea Zambonin have quietly become key members of the squad. Exeter are already preparing for next season with more new signings on the way including Dallas McLeod and Will Butt.
Elsewhere Gloucester earned an important victory over Sale in a match that added more drama to the race for European qualification. George Ford tried to inspire Sale with smart kicking and a long-range drop goal. However Gloucester fly-half Charlie Atkinson stole the show with two excellent tries.
This round of Premiership matches produced several surprise results. Four of the five lower-ranked teams managed to win. Therefore the final weeks of the season are now looking far more exciting than many expected only a short time ago.
